Making education accessible to everyone

Education has the power to change the world. When everyone is given the chance to develop their skills, society benefits. We increase the diversity of viewpoints and solve problems better – together.

Last year, I travelled to London to watch Lisa* receive her law degree. Having been trafficked as a young woman, Lisa used e-learning to educate herself and in doing so, she transformed her life. Lisa is just one example of many who have benefitted from accessible education.

It is therefore so important that we make learning universally available and to do that, we need technology. It opens up untold opportunities by helping individuals to get on a career path – no matter who, or where, they are – and helps employers to hire skilled and motivated team members.

But how do we harness the promise of technology and apply it to the real world, where time and poverty shackle so many? Here are four things to consider:

E-learning for varying circumstances

Nowadays, education has become a lifelong exercise. It can help people to improve their circumstances, increase their chances of promotion or carve out a new career path. We must ensure no one is missed and eliminate personal circumstances as a barrier.

Everyone’s personal situation is different. The schedule of a classroom-based course is unlikely to suit every student’s work and life commitments, while others may not have access to a classroom in the first place.

Flexible e-learning options like remote or anytime access to courses can ensure that students of all types can engage with educational materials in their own time and at their own speed. It can reduce the rate of missed classes due to time clashes, and also allows businesses to upskill their employees without impinging on staff productivity.

Make understanding a priority

Traditional ways of studying have focused on memorisation and rote learning. But today’s teaching methods are evolving to help students understand the content within a wider context. So how can you ensure that all types of learners have a good understanding of the material being taught?

Scenario-based tuition can help students to understand the complexities of a given situation and make informed and educated decisions. Whether it’s induction tutorials or technology training, it can help students to understand how to apply their knowledge in an everyday environment.

Gamification, meanwhile, will truly be a game-changer. As the global gaming industry continues to explode, incorporating gaming into learning has proven to increase training enjoyment and students’ key message retention.

Develop solutions that encourage growth, not hamper it

We need to ensure that education is used as a tool, rather than a barrier, to success. Advances in technology make this possible.

Instead of tying students to fees and loans, technology has the power to lower the cost of producing high-quality and engaging educational content. That means lower costs for the payer, too, and makes it more feasible for corporations and governments to fund education for people like Lisa, who can’t afford or access it. Whether it’s taking English as a second language or pursuing a career that once seemed impossible, organisations – public and private – can assist others in reaching their goals and seizing their right to an education.

We are witnessing a revolution in the study. Education that was previously out of reach for so many has suddenly become possible. Technology is the driving force. Educators and the business community must continue to invest in the evolution of education to ensure no one ever misses out on the opportunity to learn again.

At Olive Group, we want to make learning universally available. We want to transform lives and ensure that everybody can benefit from lifelong tuition and much more accessible education. Moreover, because we can cut the cost of training by up to 90% and reduce time lost to training for businesses by a similar amount, we ensure that the traditional barriers to education are eliminated.
